Alot of people recently asked me "Whats the difference between designing for fun and designing for print?"

These are some things I can tell:

1. Color: Use CMYK

RGB is red/green/blue, the colors of light a monitor uses.

CMYK is Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, the ink colors a printer mixes together to make colors.

Make them in CMYK. It will still look different on screen than it does on paper, but it will be closer.

2. Font Rules 101

The 5 fonts rule
Try to avoid using too many different fonts on one design. AT MOST use 5 fonts. Usually I use 3-4 fonts.

The sans serif Header
After a while I realized that most of the time, its best to use sans serif fonts for the Header.

Ex: the font for this header is Impact a bold system default font that works for this design.

Floaters
Try to avoid body text floating around, try to keep it tight, but still with breathing room

* if you press ctrl +' on your pc or ⌘ +' on your mac you can
see a quick reference grid with flyers i try to avoid any body type to have more then 2 squares separate from the next line

3. BLEEDS & Guides
When designing for print, whatever it is will get cut be flyer, cards, posters, etc.

Guides
To make a guide in PS you go View> New Guide. Simple

The purpose of making a guide is a visual line to align elements ranging from type to layers

Usually I like to make two guides to show me the center of the document when i start by make a guide a 50% vertical and another at 50% horizontal

Bleeds
Bleeds are the guides around the document that creat a kind of invisible border for the designer where the design might get cut.

So to avoid any missing letters (Ex: Neighborhood ---> eighborhoo), we put bleeds around where it might get cut and make sure text stays inside of the bleeds.

*A bleed is usually at .25 in around the whole design, its always good to ask the printers that are going to do the job what are their bleeds

That is just 3 rules to follow, there are alot more, but like i learned: A wiseman once said, somethings need to be learned from experience
